ConnectCNC: Problem Downloading Programs

spacer We have had some reports that ConnectCNC has problems transferring programs from CNC machines to computers using serial ports.
Later versions of Windows have implemented additional security mechanisms to prevent accidental or intentional file or folder modification by not allowing users other than owner of file or folder to access it.

We always recommend potential purchasers to download the demo and test our software in their environment before purchasing. The demo is a fully functional version of the software.
We also recommend that our software be installed with the administrator logged in.

If you have a problem with ConnectCNC, please try these remedies, in the order they are listed:
  • First, if you are using USB to COMM adapter it is very important to make sure that adapter’s driver is compatible with your version of Windows.

    To check:
    Open the computer's Device Manager
    Expand “Ports (COM & LPT)” node, make sure there are no warning icons.
    Then right click on port of interest
    Click “Properties”, Check the driver properties and make sure with the adapters manufacturer that the installed driver is compatible with your version of Windows.

  • Check to make sure your FIFO buffers disabled on the PC.

    Also in the device manager: Double click the port you're communicating with.
    Click the tab for Port Settings then Advanced. Uncheck the FIFO buffers.
    Having this turned on can cause problems with RS232 transfer, especially DNC.

  • With the Administrator logged in:
    Using “My Computer” or the Windows Explorer, navigate to the folder holding the ConnectCNC.exe file. The default is “C:\Program Files\CNC Consulting\EditCNC” or “C:\Program Files\CNC Consulting\ConnectCNC”
    Windows 64bit users go to “C:\Program Files (x 86)\CNC Consulting…”

    Right click “ConnectCNC.exe” and select Properties.

    Click the “Compatibility” tab.
    Check “Run this program in compatibility for…” and select “Windows XP (Service Pack ..)”
    Check “Run this program as administrator”
    Click “Change settings for all users” and set the properties as above.

    Click the “General” tab.
    Make sure the “Read Only” and “Hidden” checkboxes are NOT checked.

  • Right-click on the file port.cfg

    In the menu that pops up click “Properties”

    Under the “General” tab make sure “Read-only” is NOT checked.
    Click “Apply” if it is not greyed out.
    Click “OK”

    Click the “Security” tab.

    Edit the user permissions to ensure that all users can Read & execute, Read, Write.
    If you are not familiar with this process, please have a reputable tech do it for you.

  • In rare cases you may also need to change the user account settings: Go to the Control Panel and choose System Security>Action Center>Change User Account Settings.
    Set the slider to “Never Notify”
    (Please note that if you do this you MUST have a good security program, such as Norton 360).
